Quick Answer
For most RPG players, solid resin dice offer reliable readability and a balanced feel, while liquid core dice add visual flair with swirling cores—choose based on whether you prioritize glanceability or spectacle.
Weight and Feel: Solid vs Liquid Core
Solid resin dice feel dense and sturdy in the hand, giving a satisfying heft when rolled. Liquid core dice, like FanRoll's Elixir sets, have a liquid-filled interior that shifts as you roll, adding a subtle kinetic sensation that some players love. The trade-off is that the liquid core can create a small bubble from the molding process, which may affect the balance slightly, though FanRoll notes they haven't seen an effect on rolling.
Visibility and Readability at the Table
In a fast-paced game, you need to read your rolls at a glance. Solid resin dice often have crisper, more contrasting numbers, especially if the paint is well applied. Liquid core dice, with their translucent bodies and moving interiors, can sometimes make numbers harder to spot, especially in low light. If you play in a dimly lit room or have players with vision issues, prioritize dice with high-contrast numbering.
Durability and Maintenance
Solid resin dice are generally more durable and easier to care for—just wipe them clean and store them in a pouch. Liquid core dice require a bit more caution: the liquid core is sealed inside, but extreme temperature changes or rough handling could potentially affect the seal. They're still dice, not delicate glass, but they're better suited for players who handle their dice gently.
Trade-Offs to Consider
- Visual Spectacle vs Readability: If you want dice that draw attention and look stunning on the table, liquid core is the winner. But if you need to read numbers quickly in fast combat, solid resin with high-contrast numbering is safer. Check the contrast of the numbering before buying liquid core dice.
- Weight and Feel: Solid resin feels heftier and more traditional; liquid core feels lighter and more dynamic. Try both if possible, or buy a two-pack of liquid core d20s to test the feel without a full set investment. Test a single liquid core d20 before committing to a full set.
- Durability and Care: Solid resin is more forgiving of drops and rough handling. Liquid core is still durable but best for players who treat their dice with care and avoid extreme temperature exposure. Store liquid core dice in a padded pouch to protect the seal.
